Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2020 Highlights

The Pravasi Bhartiya Divas is organised by the Ministry of External Affairs every year on January 09.

On the occasion of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas this year, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Minister of State for External Affairs Shri V Muraleedharan interacted with Indian Diaspora across the globe through an interactive digital video conference with overseas citizens of India (OCI) delegations in eight consulates around the world, including Singapore, London, New York, Doha, Perth, Paramaribo, Kuala Lumpur and Port Louis.

Responding to a question S Jaishankar said, “We as a country, as a government definitely would like to see the NRIs invest metaphorically and literally in India in a bigger way.”

He also said that it is an ultimate ‘act of faith’ and the government is committed to creating better channels for the diaspora to invest.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is a celebratory day observed on 9 January to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India. The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Ahmedabad on 9 January 1915.
